殷商甲骨文(英文: oracle bone inscriptions)是今天所见最早的中国文字，却晚到19世纪末才重见天日。这块完整的牛胛骨版上刻的文字，排列整齐，结构匀称。其中还有一些象形字：“囚”字是一侧身站立的人置于方框形的囚笼中；“马”字是勾勒马的轮廓，马腿是用直线表示，马头、马的躯干、马的尾巴则是用曲线摹状；两个“车”字都是从俯视的角度看到的车辆形状，但是结构有所不同。

中国书法是书写汉字的艺术，也是中国特有的一门艺术。在以毛笔为书写工具的时代，参与书法活动的人非常广泛，凡是读书人自幼就得开始习字，由此学习书法的基本技巧（也是最初的审美训练），此后相伴终身，所以书法又是中国最实用、最普及的艺术。

书法的历史很悠远，可以追溯到三千多年前的殷商时代。那时的甲骨文和金文（青铜器铭文）是今天所能见到的最古的汉字，也是中国最古的书法“作品”。金文书法带有美化装饰的倾向，体现了整肃端庄的标准美。后来的秦朝的小篆刻石、汉朝的隶书碑刻、唐朝的楷书碑刻，还有那些装饰性的瓦当文、美术化的花样字，都接续了殷商金文书法的这一传统。
