Chinese calligraphy is an Oriental art. It is said that the core of Chinese culture is its philosophy, and at the centre of this core is the Chinese Calligraphy. 中国书法是书写汉字的艺术，也是中国特有的一门艺术。在以毛笔为书写工具的时代，参与书法活动的人非常广泛，凡是读书人自幼就得开始习字，由此学习书法的基本技巧（也是最初的审美训练），此后相伴终身，所以书法又是中国最实用、最普及的艺术。
书法的历史很悠远，可以追溯到三千多年前的殷商时代。那时的甲骨文和金文（青铜器铭文）是今天所能见到的最古的汉字，也是中国最古的书法“作品”。金文书法带有美化装饰的倾向，体现了整肃端庄的标准美。后来的秦朝的小篆刻石、汉朝的隶书碑刻、唐朝的楷书碑刻，还有那些装饰性的瓦当文、美术化的花样字，都接续了殷商金文书法的这一传统。

汉字从甲骨文、金文经过大篆、小篆，发展为隶书、草书、楷书、行书。其自由多样的线条曲直运动和空间构造，表现、传达出各种形体、情感、气势，而通过笔法墨法的相兼相润，使得字体肥瘦枯润，巨细收纵，变化无穷，从而形成了具审美风貌的中国书法艺术。
书法艺术兼备了具象和表现两种功能，虽然没有庄严堂皇的帷幕，没有悠悠飘扬的笙箫，没有枝叶扶疏的茂林修竹，也没有车水马龙的尘世写照，但它“无色而具有画图的灿烂 [ … ]
