米芾的书法批评是他书法实践的一个侧面写照,两者相互发明、作用。米芾在《海岳名言》中从古人到近人、从用笔到章法、从小字到大字等多个方面提出了自己的见解。其中褒贬不一,或褒奖非常,或极力贬低。对于一个人米芾也因批判对象的不同而给出相应客观的评鉴。《海岳名言》处处体现了米芾清广洒脱的性格和直率真诚的批评风格。“吾书小字行书,有如大字。唯家藏真迹跋尾,间或有之,不以与求书者。心既贮之,随意落笔,皆得自然备其古雅。”这是米芾对自己小字行书所作的评论。
